I am 64 years old. I have led a strong and successful life. I have run large companies and am a man in complete control of my past and present. But I always knew there was more for me. There was something in me that I just could not define or know. There was a deep and long suppressed desire to set aside parts of me to a shelf and allow myself to experience a new sexual world but knew not what it was.

When I started working with Orpheus Black, I had a kind of inner restlessness and many inarticulate, unsorted desires. I was searching for clarity about my own roles in relationships, and I wanted to expand my range-of-play. I had no previous experience with kink and was unsure of my level of interest in it, though I was aware of some fantasies and shadowy material lurking under the surface of my conscious mind. My unfamiliarity with this huge part of my psyche begged for attention. 

I had no idea how crucial this work would become. Through regular sessions, I have learned more about my inner life than ever. I can feel my ability to know and speak my desires (to myself and others) increasing exponentially. I’m shedding layers of fear and guilt about my own or other’s pleasure. He has been perhaps the safest, edgiest person I’ve worked with: safe, because he has helped me define and establish my own desires, boundaries and limits with subtlety and care. Edgy, because the journey has ventured into previously unexplored, primal corners of the mind.

Orpheus Black is one of my favorite people. Not just because he is an expert and teaches classes on bondage, fireplay, and orgasm control but underneath his somewhat intimidating facade is one of the smartest, good-hearted, and yes, funniest people I know.

My sessions with Orpheus have been nothing short of transformational, impacting every area of my life. They have brought me closer to authentic integration of my eroticism and my humanity. 

As a psychotherapist, I have often felt unprepared to respond skillfully to challenges my clients are facing in their eroticism. Therapists, counsellors and psychotherapists are often left floundering in this area, as our training programs usually don’t address this part of the human experience. I was looking for a more complex and nuanced understanding of human sexuality beyond avoiding the issue and the common cultural narrative that ‘kink is just for people who sexualise trauma’.

Orpheus offered an experiential and didactic learning environment for me to come into a deeper understanding of human psychosexual development and expression. He is an exceptionally wise, knowledgeable and creative guide with years of experience and commitment to his own learning. He is a warm and compassionate teacher, an amazing orator who fluidly moves between irreverent humour, eloquence and razor-sharp insight. In short, I felt like my mind had been blown every session. I learned a huge amount from working with such an experienced and skilled coach. 

Throughout my time working with him, I have noticed a substantial change in how comfortable my clients are bringing the more vulnerable and real aspects of their sexuality to their sessions with me. I am able to serve them on ever deeper levels, as I come into greater acceptance of myself - and therefor others - in the full spectrum of our erotic expression. 

On a personal level, as someone who has been privileged in working with some of the leaders in my field (as both a client and in training situations), I was shocked to discover that there was still a large amount of integration needed in this area of my development. My work with Orpheus has been some of the deepest and most innovative shadow work I have encountered. He held an extremely safe container for me, with such a high degree of connection and sensitivity, and in this I was able to explore territory I never thought was possible within myself and in relation to others. 

I am more confident in my relationships, more secure in my attachment processes, more self-possessed and accepting in my erotic expression (and that of others), and more differentiated in my voice and perceptions because of our work together. I love myself and others more deeply and courageously as a result of this experience. 

We have so few healthy masculine role models - and even fewer with the courage to embody the level of complexity, wisdom and integrity that Orpheus does. Anyone who chooses to work with him will be giving themselves the enormous gift of working with a true master, a committed mentor and an inspiring human being.
